A new secure ID feature from Mastercard dubbed “Identity Check Mobile” uses biometrics, including facial recognition technology and fingerprints, to simplify online shopping.
Mastercard’s new technology has begun rolling out across Europe, allowing the credit card company to securely verify a cardholder’s identity when authorizing a purchase. Mastercard Identity Check Mobile eliminates the need for passwords by matching a user’s selfie or fingerprint to one on file.
Currently, Mastercard’s pay-by-selfie feature is available in the U.K., Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. Successful trials have already been completed in the Netherlands, the U.S. and Canada.
Globally, consumers can expect to start seeing Mastercard Identity Check Mobile launching in phases throughout 2017.
“We are relentlessly focused on making the online payment experience near frictionless, without making any compromises on safety and security,” said Ajay Bhalla, president of Enterprise Risk & Security, Mastercard. “This is a significant milestone in the evolution of payments. Shopping in person has been revolutionized thanks to advances like contactless cards, mobile payments, and wearables, and now we are making Identity Check Mobile a reality for online shopping in Europe, and soon, the world.”
New efforts to ease security come as research shows most consumers engage in poor password practices — just 33 percent of respondents in a recent survey said they use unique passwords for all of their online accounts.
